No matter one’s belief system, this time of year connotes the act of giving in Hong Kong, and we often find ourselves thinking of what best to buy our loved ones or what charities to support. Well, why not combine the two and donate to your preferred education-based charity to make a real difference on behalf of a loved one?
Why education? According to the Hong Kong Poverty Situation Report 180,000 HK children (one in five) are living in poverty. That is a scandalous figure given the riches of this great city.
Child poverty is a vicious circle as it not only injures the child in the present, but also his/her future prospects. The only way out of a depressive cycle is to provide education that can help children escape economic burdens by achieving good jobs in adulthood. On top of that, studies have proven that investment in children’s education can help bring whole families out of poverty, so alleviating intergenerational poverty and bettering our community as a whole.
The onus lies on those who have more than most to give. With that in mind, here are just a few Hong Kong charities that help bring forms of education to children in need:
The Hub Hong Kong, gives children going through difficult circumstances food, education and support: www.thehubhk.org/
Teach4HK brings top university graduates in to teach underprivileged children: http://www.tfhk.org/
And of course, our own Trust focuses on science and education to better lives: https://yvonneluitrust.org/
Whatever you choose this festive season, do give a gift that keeps on giving.
